Welcome — I’m Roxanne Bigwood, EMDR Therapist & Trauma-Informed Counsellor
I understand how heavy life can feel when you’re carrying the impact of painful experiences, anxiety that refuses to switch off, or an inner critic that constantly tells you you’re not enough. These feelings can leave you overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from the person you know you could be. You might notice yourself repeating old patterns, reacting more intensely than you want to, or struggling to feel truly safe or settled in your own body.
You are not alone in this — and you don’t have to keep holding everything by yourself.
In our sessions, my priority is to create a warm, grounded space where you feel safe to bring whatever is on your mind. No judgement. No pressure. Just calm, steady support.
I listen deeply — with compassion, curiosity, and respect — so you can begin to unravel the experiences that shaped you and release the weight you’ve been carrying for far too long.
Alongside person-centred counselling, I offer EMDR therapy, which can be especially powerful if anxiety, trauma, or certain memories still affect you today.
EMDR helps the mind and body process what happened so that the emotional intensity reduces and the past stops intruding on the present. You don’t have to relive every detail. Together, we work gently, at your pace, supporting your nervous system to feel safer and more regulated.
Clients often share that, over time, they feel calmer and more grounded.
The constant anxious “buzz” softens.
Self-doubt eases.
Boundaries become easier to set.
Life begins to feel more manageable, less overwhelming, and more authentically yours.
Therapy isn’t about fixing you. It’s about creating a kinder relationship with yourself, healing the parts of you that have been working so hard to cope, and helping you live more freely in the present.
If any of this resonates, I would be honoured to walk alongside you as you take these steps toward healing.

My approach is warm, steady, and deeply respectful. I believe that meaningful healing happens when you feel safe enough to be fully yourself. In our work together, there is no judgement, no pressure to share more than you’re ready to, and no expectation to “perform” therapy in a certain way.
Many of the people I support appear to be coping on the outside, yet inside feel overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted from holding everything together. Some are living with the impact of trauma or PTSD. Others struggle with constant worry, panic, or a harsh inner voice that never seems to quieten.
I understand how confusing it can feel when your reactions don’t make sense — when your body responds as though you’re still in danger, even though you know you’re not. This is often the imprint of trauma or prolonged stress on the nervous system.
As an EMDR specialist, I work not only with your thoughts, but with the deeper emotional and physiological responses that keep you feeling stuck. My combined approach integrates person-centred counselling with EMDR therapy, allowing space to explore your story while also gently processing the memories and experiences that continue to affect you.
You are not broken. Your responses make sense in the context of what you’ve lived through. Together, we create space for understanding, healing, and lasting change.

When I started counselling, I was overwhelmed, sad all the time, I felt I had no control over my life and I was being dragged through life by the needs and wants of other people. And I didn’t know why I felt this way or how I had to got to be here, but I knew that I wanted to feel better so I decided to get professional help.
Six months later, my life is completely different: I’m happy and I have control of my life. I have boundaries to protect my wellbeing and for the first time in many years my future is full of positivity instead of the negative thoughts that plagued me before.
Working with Roxanne, I discovered the reasons for why I was feeling the way I was and also where it had all come from (I like to know the reasons why for everything so this was important for me). Roxanne immediately made me feel at ease so I could talk openly and begin to work through and process my past that was affecting my future. One way of processing was the use of EMDR therapy which for me had a very positive outcome, it was really amazing! I now have the tools I need to be able to deal with difficult situations that would previously have triggered me.
I would highly recommend The Counselling Practice, Roxanne is professional, non-judgmental and patient and the six months I worked with her have completely transformed my life. I cannot say thank you enough!
My anxiety was at it's highes tand it was hard to cope. I started therapy with Roxanne and within a few weeks I was feeling calmer and more in control of my anxiety. I would highly recommend anyone struggling with anxiety and anxious thoughts.
